Studying Vocabulary with Flashcard Apps

You probably have your phone with you all the time. And you probably check it all the time, scrolling through all your feeds. What if we would use these 5-minute intervals for good? What if we could whip out our phones any time of day and start studying vocabulary? We can!

Personally, I love flashcard apps. I use them all the time. They save so much time and help against the ‘I don’t have time’ argument.

Most flashcard apps nowadays use the Leitner system, which is super awesome. The Leitner system is a form of an SRS, a spaced repetition system. This technique was invented by the German science journalist Sebastian Leitner.
Your brain tends to forget things and does this at regular intervals. And apparently, if we repeat a word just before we forget it, it is remembered way better. Great!

Take three boxes, and mark them 1, 2, and 3. Put all your flashcards in box 1, and go learn them! If you get one wrong, it stays in box 1. If you get one right, it moves to box 2. And if you would get it correctly in box 2, it moves to box 3.
Go through all the cards in box 1 every day, box 2 every three days, and box 3 every 5 days. This way you repeat the cards you know well on a longer interval than the cards you know worse. And the cards will distribute automatically in the right boxes because you move them when you get them correct.

Some flashcard apps do this automatically. They may use some variation of the Leitner system. Some popular apps are:

Anki
Very popular app and rightfully so. Small problem is that it’s quite pricey on iOS. On Android it’s free. Anki is the most used flashcard app I think and has a large community of other people also using it. You can get tons of already put in flashcard sets from them!

Memrise
Also a very good app. You can get it for free on the Appstore and Playstore. A cool thing about Memrise is that you can do a lot more than just flashcards, it is made for language learning! Make sure to check it out!

Quizlet
Quizlet is also a solid choice. I personally use this one. On Quizlet you can set dates for when you want to have learned all your flashcards and it switches things up in the way they ask you the translations. Good app this one!
